Hack Your Notebook Day: July 9, 2014
On July 9, our writing cohort, along with National Writing Project cohorts across the country participated in "Hack Your Notebook" Day. I really had no clue what this would entail. Seriously, I did believe we were simply going to employ Lucy Calkin's idea of decorating our notebooks with cute cutouts, photos, and more. Well, perhaps the key word for this day was "more". It involved creating a circuit (as in electricity) under our paper so that little lights would peer through our designs. Some of us jumped in with both feet, eager to get to the science piece. Others of us decided it was dreadful from the get-go and tried to just "be done" with the assignment, finding that trickier said than done. And then there was me, in the middle someplace. I loved the creativity but was hesitant of the science piece, reminiscing briefly about when Dad sat on the couch next to me explaining the "positive" and "negative" ideas of electricity. I decided to work on the "design", and wait for my "science-oriented" peeps to come up with the "how to" part of the circuitry. That ended up working splendidly, and I was very excited at the end of the day when I had page that actually lit up! I can see other applications beyond the notebook for this...such as an interactive arts integration project to visually represent student writing. |
